More talk about the future of the “Spider-Man” franchise, and actor Tom Holland’s involvement in it, has circled today.
Previously it had been indicated producer Amy Pascal wants Holland to keep playing the role and hinted that a new trilogy on the way.
Holland himself has been more reticent, saying he loves the character but is uncertain of the future. One thing he has said a few times now is that he would like to serve as a on-screen mentor for another Spider-Man (eg. Miles Morales).
A new report at Puck today (via The Playlist) indicates “a deal for a fourth Marvel-produced movie that will star Tom Holland” is “already quietly in development”.
If true, this would suggest the Sony/Disney agreement tensions that happened last time won’t be repeated. Meanwhile Holland spoke with THR about the previous agreement that led to the upcoming “Spider-Man: No Way Home”. Original trade reports would suggest he’s still supposed to be featured in another upcoming Marvel Studios event movie, but Holland says that’s not the case:
“That’s not accurate at all. The new deal that was struck up was this understanding between the two studios that should Marvel want me to appear in one of their movies, then it would be an open conversation.
I don’t think it’s as black and white as ‘I have a three-picture deal with Marvel and a three-picture deal with Sony.’ It’s just this open conversation and open dialogue between Mr. Iger and Mr. Rothman.”
Holland has revealed the opening scene of ‘No Way Home’ which you can see by clicking here, and also revealed to BBC Radio 1 he’s in a WhatsApp group with actors Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield.
Earlier in the press tour, he told Collider that filmmaker Jon Watts originally pitched the new “Spider-Man” as a movie involving the villain Kraven the Hunter. However the creative team moved away from that:
“For a long time, there was going to be a Kraven movie that was going to be the third movie because things weren’t working out and all sorts of different stuff. Jon pitched me this Kraven movie, which actually was really cool. I don’t want to talk about it in case that movie ends up happening down the line, but it was fun.”
Of course, we know Sony is developing a standalone “Kraven The Hunter” film with Aaron Taylor-Johnson in the role. “Spider-Man: No Way Home” is set to debut in theaters on December 17th.
