After leaving fans hanging for three months, Netflix finally renewed its series adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s iconic comic “The Sandman” for more episodes following the first season launch in August.
The acclaimed adaptation scored rave reviews and strong numbers, but concerns were that the expensive show wouldn’t get a follow-up greenlit at Netflix, who has been cost-cutting this past year.
When the renewal came though, it was very carefully worded not to use the terminology of a ‘second season’ but rather a “continuation of ‘The Sandman’ world” along with no details on episode count and the like.
Actor Mason Alexander Park, who plays Desire in the series and currently serves as Ziggy’s architect Ian Wright on NBC’s “Quantum Leap” revival, revealed at a convention appearance that filming on the new run begins this Summer.
He adds for now, he can’t comment on the format of the series as it sounds like Netflix hasn’t settled on what it is they’re calling it yet:
“Netflix has not gone on record calling it a Season 2, on purpose. And so I will, from now on and in the future and in perpetuity, until the end of universe will not refer to it as ‘Season 2.’ Until, you know we know what it is.
There’s more Sandman coming in a really cool way, and it can take many forms. We’re starting shooting in the summer, and we’re gonna tackle the next huge chunk of stories in however long that might take. And I am really excited to share what that might be with everybody, eventually.”
It has been speculated the series will switch to using ‘Volumes’ rather than ‘seasons’ to describe the new runs of the show. The first season adapted the first two-and-a-bit of the ten trade paperbacks in the series, which vary from short story collections to some with longer single story arcs.
That initial run of the Tom Sturridge-led series was the eighth most-watched English language show on Netflix in 2022.
