While the release date of “Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse” uncertain, it’s not clear when we’ll see the wrap-up of the events in this Summer’s “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-verse”.
However, before then we will be seeing Shameik Moore’s Miles Morales popping up on screen again for a new short film titled “The Spider Within: A Spider-Verse Story”.
The project is set to premiere at this year’s Animation Is Film Festival in mid-October followed by a panel with director Jarelle Dampier, writer Khaila Amazan, VFX supervisor Clara Chan and animation supervisor Joe Darko.
Collider has posted new details about the story which will explore a different kind of struggle that Miles has had to deal with ever since he became Spider-Man, one that many of us face every day – anxiety.
In the story, Miles starts getting anxious when his responsibilities as a student, friend, and city savior start to pile up. The pressure leads to Miles having a panic attack and confronting visual manifestations of his anxiety on a trip through his subconscious.
The short aims to teach that reaching out for help is also an act of bravery. The short is a part of Sony Pictures Imageworks’ LENS (Leading and Empowering New Storytellers) program giving filmmakers from under-represented groups the chance to tell new stories in the Sony Animation world.
Dampier used his own struggles with mental health, sleep paralysis, anxiety and panic attacks to inform the mental state of the character.
