The gargantuan success of Nintendo and Illumination’s “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” has seen the animated feature quickly become the biggest movie of the year along with being embraced by audiences.
That success has now led to Shigeru Miyamoto, the legendary video game creator of many of Nintendo’s biggest franchises, to confirm to Japanese news site Nihon Keizai Shimbun (via My Nintendo News) today that there is “no doubt” he will make another film based on Nintendo franchises.
Miyamoto, who served as a producer on the new movie, is responsible for the creation of not just the “Super Mario Bros.” games but also “The Legend of Zelda” games, “Donkey Kong,” “Star Fox,” “F-Zero” and “Pikmin”. He has worked at Nintendo for nearly forty years and has been dubbed “the Spielberg of video games”.
In the wake of Mario’s success, speculation has been high in regards to what property Nintendo will adapt next, be it another “Mario” film, a “Legend of Zelda” movie or something like “Starfox”, which lends itself to an animated feature.
Neither Nintendo nor Illumination has announced any further projects at this point. They’re both still basking in “The Super Mario Bros. Movie”, which is on track to drop just 39% in its third weekend with a domestic haul of $56 million expected for the three days.
In the U.S. alone, it’s expected to hit a $432 million total by Sunday, and worldwide it is expected to reach over $830 million at the same point.
