More Join “Gladiator 2” As Keoghan Exits

Netflix

A couple of key casting additions have taken place on Ridley Scott’s “Gladiator” sequel whilst the project has also switched a previously cast key role.

The project is a follow-up to the 2001 best picture Oscar winner, which followed Maximus Decimus Meridius (Russell Crowe), a former general who is sold into slavery and forced to fight as a gladiator under the rule of Emperor Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix).

Set decades later, the story will center on Lucius (Paul Mescal), son of Lucilla (Connie Nielsen) and nephew of Commodus.

“Eternals” and “The Banshees of Inisherin” actor Barry Keoghan was previously cast as Emperor Caracalla in the project but he’s now had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts. As a result, “The White Lotus” and “Fear Street” scene stealer Fred Hechinger is in negotiations to take over the role.

Also now hopping onboard are May Calamawy, Lior Raz, Peter Mensah and Matt Lucas whilst Derek Jacobi will reprise his role of Senator Gracchus – one of the few returning talents alongside Nielsen. “Moon Knight” actress Calamawy is playing the female lead in the film and beat out a lot of competition for the part.

They all join Joseph Quinn as Emperor Geta along with Denzel Washington and Pedro Pascal in unknown roles.

David Scarpa (“Napoleon,” “All The Money In the World”) is penning the script, and Scott will produce with Michael Pruss, Doug Wick and Lucy Fisher.

At the time of the release, “Gladiator” grossed $460 million at the box office and earned eleven Oscar nominations – winning five awards, including Best Picture and Best Actor.
