Following the reveal of the project the other day, Millennium Media has revealed more plot and production details about its upcoming “Hellboy” reboot at the European Film Market in Berlin.
As reported earlier, Brian Taylor (“Crank”) will direct the now confirmed title “Hellboy: The Crooked Man” which will begin shooting next month in Bulgaria. Casting is in the late stages and should be announced soon.
For the first time in the franchise to date, original creator Mike Mignola has penned the script alongside his Dark Horse comics collaborator Chris Golden. The goal being to “expand Hellboy’s world through one of the most beloved issues of the comic series.”
The new feature will see Hellboy and a rookie BPRD agent stranded in 1950s rural Appalachia. There, they discover a small community haunted by witches and led by a local devil with a troubling connection to Hellboy’s past – the Crooked Man.
In the comic, said Crooked Man was an 18th century miser and war profiteer named Jeremiah Witkins who was hanged for his crimes yet returned from Hell as the region’s resident Devil.
The plan is for this reboot to spawn a new series of movies following the box office disappointment on the 2019 version starring David Harbour.
Millennium Media’s President Jeffrey Greenstein says in a statement: “The Crooked Man is a departure from all previous Hellboy films where Mike Mignola and the creator of the comics will finally shepherd an authentic version of his stories and characters in film form.”
Millennium Media and Dark Horse Entertainment are teaming on the project. Taylor most recently directed the dark comedy “Mom and Dad” starring Nicolas Cage and Selma Blair.
