An extensive new feature piece in The Hollywood Reporter has gone into more details about the new “Superman” film in the works at Warner Bros. Pictures.
The project, to be produced by J.J. Abrams and penned by acclaimed writer Ta-Nehisi Coates, will NOT be tied to Henry Cavill’s DCEU-led version of the character.
Rather, much like Matt Reeves’ upcoming “The Batman,” Coates’ script has his Superman existing as a standalone project in its own universe – not connected to any other DC films or series.
The report indicates the script, which isn’t expected to be ready until the very end of the year, is considering the option of being a 20th Century period tale and will follow the classic story of the Kryptonian child Kal-El sent to Earth and growing up as Clark Kent.
The project is currently in the early stages of finding a director with Warners said to be committed to finding a Black director for the film and a Black actor to take on the Kal-El role.
Michael B. Jordan shot down reports from April that indicated he’s up for the role. He says: “[I’m] flattered that people have me in that conversation. It’s definitely a compliment, but I’m just watching on this one.”
If the script isn’t going to be done until December, it means filming won’t be taking place until well into 2022 so don’t expect this new Superman to fly onto screens until 2023 or 2024 at the earliest.
Speaking of Superman, some new photos from filming on the set of “Superman and Lois” this week have gone up and show star Tyler Hoechlin back in the old fashioned Max Fleischer style Superman suit which he briefly wore in the series’ pilot.
