Some first look photos have been released from filmmaker Zack Snyder’s upcoming directorial effort, the zombie heist feature “Army of the Dead” at Netflix.
The story takes place after a plague has been released from Nevada’s Area 51, the U.S. government managing to contain it by building a wall around Las Vegas as it is overrun by zombies.
Dave Bautista plays the leader of a group of mercenaries who venture into the quarantine zone to pull off the greatest heist ever attempted. Hiroyuki Sanada, Garret Dillahunt, Raul Castillo, Omari Hardwick, Tig Notaro, Nora Arnezeder, Matthias Schweighofer, Samantha Win and Rich Cetrone also star.
Speaking with EW, Snyder says the film is more than meets the eye and will contain more emotional depth than you might expect:
“It is a full-blown, balls-to-the-wall zombie heist movie, so it’s genre-on-genre in a great way. So you expect pure zombie mayhem, and you get that, 100 percent. But also you get these really amazing characters on a fantastic journey. It’s going to surprise people that there’s a lot of warmth and real emotion with these great characters.”
He adds that the film will contain “metaphors about immigration, consumerism, and a jingoistic president.” Snyder’s last foray into zombies was his 2004 remake of “Dawn of the Dead” which had some of the best notices of his career.
Netflix has already greenlit an anime spin-off series and is planning a prequel feature as well with Matthias Schweighofer helming. “Army of the Dead” arrives on the service sometime in 2021.
