With Starz’s “Outlander” series having just returned for its fifth season, showrunner Ronald D. Moore sat down with Variety recently and was asked an obvious question – would he consider spin-offs?
Starz CEO Jeffrey Hirsch confirmed in January that the network was “working with our partners at Sony” on the possibility of other series set in the same universe. Then, of course, came the news the other week that Starz’s other big hit “Power” is getting a full four spin-offs.
So “Outlander” getting at least one sounds reasonable and Moore confirms there are talks underway: “We are definitely talking about it, there’s nothing official but we’re in conversations about it.”
The fifth season of the series draws closer to the Revolutionary War, and the new season will spend less time on the road and more on the community growing in Fraser’s Ridge.
Meanwhile, Moore was also asked about the upcoming “Battlestar Galactica” revival in the works on NBC’s Peacock streaming service – one that has “Mr. Robot” creator Sam Esmail serving as showrunner.
Moore spearheaded the much acclaimed 2003 reboot and Esmail previously said this would be a continuation rather than another reboot. Moore agrees with that assessment:
“Sam called me and was very gracious, he didn’t pitch me the story so I don’t know. But he said his plans and he wasn’t going to re-start the show and recast it but he wanted to do something in the same universe. Sam’s amazing and I love ‘Mr. Robot.’ I was like, you know, ‘You’re an amazing guy and amazing writer, go with god!'”
“Outlander” is on Starz now. The new “Galactica” hasn’t set a potential launch date yet.
