“Moonlighting” Creator Talks Hulu Release

One of the biggest streaming announcements this month was the streaming debut of the series “Moonlighting” which will be coming to Hulu in full in October.

The Bruce Willis and Cybill Shepherd-led series premiered in 1985 and became an instant hit, portraying strong chemistry between the pair who played the often-at-odds owners of a Los Angeles-based detective agency.

For various reasons, the show has been unavailable to stream for some time, a lot of those issues due to musical licensing. Now, Hulu is not only bringing it back but doing so with an HD remaster and almost all the original soundtrack intact.

Creator Glenn Gordon Caron recently spoke with Slashfilm about the show’s return saying this remaster and return to streaming arrangement has been in the works for a little over a year.

Speaking more about what’s happening with the show’s music licensing, he says:

“I would say we were able to preserve the vast majority of it… Once or twice, and maybe slightly more than once or twice, we had our hearts broken, and we had to do things somewhat differently.

I would say 95% of the time in the ways that matter most, it’s there. I think the songs that people remember, there are songs that are most important to the show and drive the story and the action, and certainly everything that Bruce sang and Cybill sang, and Curtis and Allyce, that’s all there.

I don’t think people will miss the things that we couldn’t quite get done. It won’t surprise you, like the Rolling Stones, we just couldn’t [get the rights].

He adds that the team that Disney put together was “very reverent about the show, they were all fans and seemed really flattered to be given the chance to do this.” As a result, they took it seriously and worked hard to make it all feel just right.

“Moonlighting” will be available to stream on Hulu starting October 10th.
