With the exception of “Loki,” which revealed it had been renewed at the end of the show’s first season, the various Marvel Studios series for the Disney+ service have been ‘one-and-done’.
Where they go from here isn’t clear but “WandaVision” kind of gets its sequel with the new “Doctor Strange” movie picking up threads and elements directly from that show. The upcoming “Ms. Marvel” series will also likely tie into the subsequent “The Marvels” film.
But what is happening with the just finished airing “Moon Knight” series isn’t clear. By all accounts, it appeared the series was designed as a one-off, and certainly Oscar Isaac gave indications in interviews there are no plans for anything further unless there was serious interest.
Then earlier this week, Marvel sent a tweet in which they originally said “experience the epic series finale” of “Moon Knight” before subsequently editing it to read “epic season finale”. Further tweets have specifically used the word season finale as well.
This quickly led to speculation an announcement about a renewal was coming, though one didn’t appear in the finale. Now, Deadline has spoken with the ‘season finale’ episode director and executive producer Mohamed Diab and asked whether he’ll be back for more work on a second season. He says:
“We don’t know if there’s a next season. Marvel doesn’t go with a conventional way, so even if they like the character and want to extend the world, it could be season 2, it could be a standalone film, or he can join another superhero’s journey. I’m kept in the dark, just like the fans. We never discussed it being a season 2, but one day there’s going to be an expansion, but I don’t know how it’s going to look like.”
Fellow executive producer Grant Curtis echoes the uncertainty of the show scoring a new season: “Where Moon Knight lands in MCU after this, I actually don’t know. As a fan, I want to know.”
The talk comes as Head writer and executive producer Jeremey Slater revealed to the House of R podcast that “Hawkeye” character Maya Lopez/Echo was to serve as a love interest before the team ultimately settled on the new character Layla El-Faouly based on the comics character Marlene Alraune.
The full first season of “Moon Knight” is on Disney+ now.
