James Wan’s upcoming sequel “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” may not be the end of the line for its star Jason Momoa.
While talking to Total Film recently, Momoa says he thinks his character “absolutely” will continue to be involved in the DCU moving forward under the watch of new DC Studios chiefs James Gunn and Peter Safran.
On the surface, the “Aquaman” sequel seems to be the final feature in the DCEU which gives way to the new cinematic universe that comes in mid-2025 with “Superman: Legacy”.
However, Gunn and Safran have previously indicated they may end up reusing select actors and their characters from the prior universe in the new DCU – not unlike what Marvel is doing with “Daredevil,” or what the Bond franchise did with Judi Dench’s M. Momoa tells the outlet:
“Peter [Safran]’s my producer [on Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom] and is a dear friend. I absolutely think Aquaman will be involved in the DCU. It’s on, bro – there’s no one bigger than Aquaman!
But, also, I hope people are excited to see the new one. It’s fun. I really enjoy doing comedy. There’s some really funny stuff with Patrick Wilson. I really adore him. We had a great time working together. It’s like we’re brothers. There’s a lot of cool stuff happening in this one.”
The character is not currently a part of the unveiled DCU Chapter One: Gods and Monsters slate. Momoa has been public about having great meetings with Gunn and Safran about his future with DC, and there’s been no indication of him officially exiting the role in the way Henry Cavill exited Superman and Ben Affleck is leaving behind Batman with the upcoming “The Flash”.
“Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” also stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Dolph Lundgren, Amber Heard, and Randall Park and arrives in December. Momoa will be seen this Summer as the villain Dante in “Fast X”.
