Sony Pictures Animation has announced a sequel is in the works to the acclaimed 2021 Oscar-nominated feature “The Mitchells vs. the Machines”.
Guillermo Martinez, who served as head of story on the first film, and “The Bad Guys 2” co-director JP Sans will both helm the film.
Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin (“The Great North”) will pen the script while “Spider-Verse” and “LEGO Movie” duo Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are once again producing.
Kurt Albrecht will also produce, while Mike Rianda, who co-wrote and directed the original, executive produces.
Netflix will distribute the film as part of its licensing agreement with Sony, the pair having had great success recently with “KPop Demon Hunters”. Netflix picked up the original during the pandemic for more than $100 million.
The original followed a family as they drove their eldest daughter, Katie (Abbi Jacobson), across the country to film school in California. While en route, a rogue AI called PAL (Olivia Colman) commands an army of robots to launch a worldwide rebellion against humanity.
It’s up to the Mitchells – including Katie’s technophobic father, Rick (Danny McBride), overly sweet mother, Linda (Maya Rudolph) and hyperactive younger brother, Aaron (Mike Rianda) – to save the day.
Production on the sequel is expected to begin in early 2026.
