Just how out of hand did the viral ‘Conformity Gate’ theory reports tied to Netflix’s “Stranger Things” get?
Multiple users of Netflix reportedly experienced some minor service disruption – including outages and error screens – on January 7th at 8pm US-ET according to Coming Soon.
That was when fans anticipated the ‘secret’ ninth episode of the fifth and final season would drop on the service, which could have caused a sudden traffic surge and minor access issues.
Of course, no episode actually dropped. The theory had been widely circulated on platforms like TikTok and Reddit for the past week – seemingly generated out of dissatisfaction with the actual series finale on New Year’s Eve.
In fact, Vice reports that the gambling app Polymarket had received over $14 million in bets that a new episode would drop on January 7th.
Despite there being no new episode, two spin-off shows are on the way including an animated series set after the second season, and a new series tied to the rock that Henry Creel (Jamie Campbell Bower) discovered in the caves.
