Illumination Entertainment’s “Minions: The Rise of Gru,” the fifth instalment in the popular “Despicable Me” franchise, is on track for a $65-75 million opening over the July 4th weekend.

Scoring good reviews, the film is the sole new opener but is still facing off against a number of titles still going strong including “Top Gun: Maverick,” “Jurassic World: Dominion,” “Elvis” and “The Black Phone”.

Early projections however can be deceiving, especially with kids films this year as we saw “Sonic the Hedgehog 2” easily beating forecasts, whereas “Lightyear” earlier this month came in considerably under expectations.
