“Minions” Studio Sets Adult Animated Label

Universal Pictures

Illumination, the famed animation studio behind the “Minions,” “Despicable Me,” “The Secret Life of Pets” and “Sing” franchises, is getting into the adult animation business.

The company has reportedly set former Netflix adult animation chief Mike Moon to form a new label, Moonlight, which aims to broaden the range of films Illumination makes and “produce animated films that push beyond the family genre”.

In his new role as president of Moonlight, Moon will serve as a senior creative advisor to Illumination. In addition, Moonlight’s films will be distributed with Universal Pictures as part of its existing deal with Illumination.

Moon has also worked at Sony, Disney and Cartoon Network and has been involved in such films as “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” “The Mitchells vs. The Machines” and “Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends”.

Illumination are set to reveal a first look at their “The Super Mario Bros.” movie in two weeks. Their most recent film, “Minions: The Rise of Gru,” has today become available to stream on Peacock.
