“Minions” Sequel Pulled From Release

Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment’s “Minions: The Rise of Gru” has been pulled from its planned July 3rd 2020 release date. A new release date will be announced at a later time.

In a statement from Illumination, the decision wasn’t a scheduling one by Universal but rather by Illumination itself as the France-based studio has to be temporarily closed in response to the severity of the pandemic situation and the French Government’s guidelines about it.

They say they will be unable to finish the film in time for a planned global release in late June and early July and so must put the safety and protection of their employees above all. They add they look forward to finding a new release date for the return of Gru and the Minions.

Brian Lynch pens the film which serves as a continuation of the 2015 feature, this time it’s set in the 1970s and focuses on the Minions (Pierre Coffin) during their first encounter with a 12-year-old Felonious Gru (Steve Carell) who dreams of becoming the world’s greatest supervillain.

The 2015 film earned $1.159 billion globally in 2015.
