“A Royal Affair” director Nikolaj Arcel will reunite with that film’s star Mads Mikkelsen on the $8.5 million-budget period Nordic western “King’s Land” at Zentropa.
Announced today at Cannes, this marks Arcel’s first Danish film for nearly a decade. Co-written by “Riders of Justice” scribe Anders Thomas Jensen, the film is based on Danish bestseller “The Captain and Ann Barbara” by Ida Jessen.
The story takes place in the mid-1700s when Danish King Frederik V declared that the desolate heaths of Jutland should be colonized so civilization could spread. A lone and uncompromising German captain named Ludwig von Kahlen steps up to bring the wild territory to heel.
Amanda Collin (“Raised By Wolves”) also stars as the mysterious Ann Barbara, a woman who wanders across the moors and impacts the fate of all around her. Filming begins September 5th in Denmark, Germany and the Czech Republic ahead of a planned Fall 2023 launch.
