Microsoft has announced it will close down the Xbox 360 Store next year.
Specifically, users of the Xbox 360 console will no longer be able to buy content directly through the console or through the Xbox 360 Marketplace site from July 29th 2024.
Players using their old Xbox 360 consoles after this date will still be able to use all their previously purchased Xbox 360 games and DLC.
If players have deleted a game that they purchased, they will still be able to re-download it. Players will also still be able to play these games online (as long as its publisher supported), and can still save their game progress to the cloud.
This does not affect the ability to buy backwards compatible Xbox 360 games and DLC on the Xbox One or Xbox Series X/S stores where titles will continue to be available.
However backwards compatibility only goes so far. 2,154 games were released for the Xbox 360 but only 633 games are considered backward compatible.
According to VGC, it’s estimated that as a result of this closure around 220 digital-only Xbox 360 games that aren’t backwards compatible will no longer be available from that date and will essentially disappear from the console with a few not available anywhere else.
