Netflix and Chernin Entertainment are teaming for “Kennedy,” a new drama series about the triumphs and tragedies of the American political dynasty – the Kennedy family.

Michael Fassbender has reportedly been cast as patriarch Joe Kennedy Sr. in the eight-episode series which aims to reveal “the intimate lives, loves, rivalries, and tragedies that shaped the most iconic dynasty in modern history, and helped create the world we live in today.”

The story begins in the 1930s with the first season charting the improbable ascent of Joe and Rose Kennedy and their nine children, including rebellious second son Jack, who struggles to escape the shadow of his golden boy older brother.

“Kennedy” is based on Fredrik Logevall’s book “.JFK: Coming of Age in the American Century, 1917-1956”. Joe Kennedy Sr. in his time was Chairman of the SEC, director of the United States Maritime Commission, and the U.S. Ambassador to the UK from 1938-1940.

Sam Shaw (“Masters of Sex,” “Manhattan”) serves as showrunner while celebrated filmmaker Thomas Vinterberg directs. Both executive produce with Logevall.

Kennedy Sr. led the political Kennedy dynasty with his wife Rose, the parents of President John F. Kennedy, Sen. Robert F. Kennedy and Sen. Edward ‘Ted’ Kennedy among a total of nine children.

Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping, Kaitlin Dahill, Eric Roth, Lila Byock, Anya Epstein, Dustin Thomason and Anna O’Malley also executive produce.
