Actor Michael Douglas says, short of a truly exceptional script landing on his desk, he is effectively retired from acting.
Douglas revealed the news during an appearance at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival this past week where he presented a newly restored version of “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest”- the first film he produced.
Now 80, Douglas spoke fairly candidly about his life and film career which began back in the late 1960s. He says he hasn’t worked since 2022, and his final film was the upcoming “Looking Through Water” which is expected to open later this Summer.
Asked why he retired, he says: “I realized I had to stop […] I had been working pretty hard for almost 60 years, and I did not want to be one of those people who dropped dead on the set […] I have no real plans to go back.”
Douglas adds that he’s content focusing on his family, saying: “in the spirit of maintaining a good marriage, I’m happy to play the wife.”
Douglas leaves behind a highly impressive body of work including “Romancing the Stone,” “The War of the Roses,” “Basic Instinct,” “The Game,” “The China Syndrome,” “Wall Street,” “Fatal Attraction,” “Falling Down,” “The Ghost and the Darkness,” “Black Rain,” “The American President,” “Wonder Boys,” “Ant-Man,” “Traffic,” and “Behind the Candelabra” as well as shows like “The Streets of San Francisco” and “Franklin”.
