Michael Cuesta, who directed the pilots for two of Showtime’s most famous series with “Dexter” and “Homeland,” has been announced as director of the first episode of “Daredevil: Born Again” for Disney+ and Marvel Studios.
The eighteen-episode series, double the length of most streaming series, begins production this month in New York and will shoot throughout the year until well into November. Cuesta is said to only be directing the pilot whereas other helmers will be announced later and will handle blocks of episodes.
The new series will see at least three of the original stars of Netflix’s “Daredevil” TV series return for the new run – Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock/Daredevil, Vincent D’Onofrio as Wilson Fisk/Kingpin, and Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle/The Punisher.
Cox and D’Onofrio have already reprised their roles in the MCU on several occasions with appearances in “She-Hulk: Attorney at Law,” “Hawkeye” and “Spider-Man: No Way Home”. Both actors will have a multi-episode arc in “Echo”.
Also starring are Michael Gandolfini, Michael Gaston, Margarita Levieva and Sandrine Holt with the latter taking over the role of Wilson’s wife Vanessa Fisk from Ayelet Zurer. Original Netflix series actors Deborah Ann Woll and Elden Henson won’t be returning in their Karen Page and Foggy Nelson roles respectively.
‘Born Again’ takes its title from the famed 1986 Frank Miller storyline, but it’s not clear how it will deviate from the plot. Matt Corman and Chris Ord are writing and executive producing the series which is targeting a Spring 2024 launch.
Pilots are important as it sets the tone and look of a series along with locking in casting. Cuesta also helmed the pilots for several CBS procedurals including “Blue Bloods” and “Elementary,” helmed episodes of “Billions” and “Dopesick,” and directed the movie “American Assassin”.
