MGM Acquires Paul Thomas Anderson’s Next

MGM has picked up Paul Thomas Anderson’s 1970s San Fernando Valley coming-of-age drama feature from Focus Features.

The film did not go into production prior to the pandemic shutdown and so MGM is taking over after Focus reportedly hit a budgetary issue. Focus was set to distribute domestically while Universal Pictures International was to handle global rollout.

The feature deals with multiple storylines with the main one centering around a kid actor attending high school in the valley. No cast is yet set.

MGM has a rather packed slate in the next year or so with the releases of co-productions like “Candyman,” “Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins,” “No Time to Die” and “Respect” along with Guy Ritchie’s “Cash Truck” and a “Tomb Raider” sequel next year.
