The upcoming big-budget TV series reimagining of Fritz Lang’s classic 1927 sci-fi film “Metropolis” is set to film in Victoria, Australia.
Hailing from “Mr. Robot” creator Sam Esmail, the eight-part drama production is expected to create nearly 4,000 jobs and will make use of one of the world’s largest permanent ‘LED volumes’ – the virtual production infrastructure pioneered by the Disney+ series “The Mandalorian”.
The story is set in a futuristic urban dystopia and follows the attempts of Freder, the wealthy son of the city master, and Maria, a saintly figure to the workers, to overcome the vast gulf separating the classes in their city and bring the workers together with Joh Fredersen, the city master.
Universal Studio Group is backing the project which Esmail is writing, directing and showrunning. Matchbox Pictures will handle on the ground production.
