Chris Messina, Allison Tolman, J.C. MacKenzie, Chris Bauer, and Hamish Linklater have all joined the cast of Starz’s Watergate-themed drama series “Gaslit”.

The series will follow the role Martha Mitchell (Julia Roberts) played in exposing the Watergate scandal. Mitchell was a socialite and wife to Nixon’s Attorney General John Mitchell (Sean Penn) and the first person to publicly declare the president’s involvement.

As a result, her personal life began to unravel and John Mitchell was forced to choose between his wife and his president. The series is based on Slate’s 2017 podcast “Slow Burn”.

Tolman plays D.C. journalist and eventual Mitchell biographer Winnie McLendon. MacKenzie will play former CIA agent Howard Hunt who helped execute the Watergate break-in. Bauer is former CIA agent James McCord who served as the head of security for the Mitchells.

Linklater plays D.C. bureaucrat Jeb Magruder who was involved in the robbery and ultimately went to jail. Finally, Messina is FBI Agent Angelo Lano who is tasked with discovering who was behind the Watergate break-in.

Robbie Pickering (“Search Party,” “Mr. Robot”) created and executive produces the series alongside Sam Esmail, Chad Hamilton, and “Captain Fantastic” writer-director Matt Ross.

This project is separate from the currently filming HBO limited series “The White House Plumbers” starring Woody Harrelson and Justin Theroux.
