With the intense snowy weather event pummeling a chunk of North America right now, it’s looking like this weekend at the box office will be not just the lowest of the year to date, but also down 9% on last year at the same time.
The Chris Pratt and Rebecca Ferguson-led “Mercy” is headed for a $12.6 million gross following $4.9 million on Friday (with previews included). Budgeted at $60 million, the film has been pummeled by critics, and audiences aren’t clicking either, judging by the B- CinemaScore.
Still, it’s enough to knock “Avatar: Fire and Ash” off the top spot. That film looks set to fall 51% this weekend to take second place with $7 million and bringing its domestic total to $378.4 million.
Rounding out the top five are “Zootopia 2” with $5.9 million, “The Housemaid” with $4.6 million, and “28 Years Later: The Bone Temple” which fell 66% in its second week to $4.2 million.
Sadly, “Marty Supreme” is unlikely to pass the $100 million gross mark – the title pulling in $3.4 million in its sixth weekend to bring its total up to $86.1 million.
The other newcomer this week was the widely panned “Return to Silent Hill” which is looking at a $3.2M weekend. Made for a tight $23 million, the movie looks like it’ll be a fizzer for distributor CineVerse.
The second week of “The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring” re-release is in eighth place with $2 million. “Primate” and “Hamnet” close out the top ten with aorund $1.8 million each.
Next week is much more packed as Sam Raimi’s “Send Help,” Markiplier’s “Iron Lung,” the Charli XCX-led “The Moment,” and the Brett Ratner-directed “Melania” documentary all open.
