The leading roles have been cast for two projects centering on two of the most infamous men involved in the Second World War.
First up, August Diehl (“A Hidden Life,” “Inglourious Basterds”) has been set to star in Russian filmmaker Kirill Serebrennikov’s film adaptation of Olivier Guez’s 2017 French novel “The Disappearance of Josef Mengele”.
Diehl will play the notorious Nazi doctor who found refuge in South America at the end of WWII and was never captured. This will focus on his fugitive years spanning from Paraguay to the Brazilian jungle. Filming on the feature begins in early June next year.
Also today, Luca Marinelli (“The Old Guard,” “Martin Eden”) has been cast as former Italian dictator Benito Mussolini in Joe Wright’s biopic series “M. Son of the Century” for Sky.
The series chronicles Mussolini’s rise to power against a backdrop of fascism and World War II and is based on Antonio Scurati’s book. Wright will direct all eight episodes of the series which will go into production at Cinecitta Studios in Italy over the next few weeks.
