“John Wick” creator Derek Kolstad has had an interesting side job lately – being a part of the writing and creative team on Marvel Studios’ “Falcon and the Winter Soldier” series.
That project, a six-episode direct follow-up to “Avengers: Endgame” that follows Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan’s characters, was almost done filming when the pandemic delayed it.
Speaking with the Script Apart podcast, Kolstad discussed his involvement and revealed the series will feature the return appearances of sevral characters from early MCU movies along with putting new focus on what have normally been secondary characters:
“What I will say is that there are characters from the earliest Marvel movies that are coming back. We’re layering them in and reinventing them in a way that’s gonna shift the storytelling structure. It’s f—ing awesome. Here’s what I’ll say: growing up, everyone would give someone like Robin shit. But Robin’s pretty badass, and became pretty badass in the comics. [We’re] taking secondary characters and putting them in the primary roles, and [as a result] they’re cooler. They’re more interesting. There’s more humanity, more longing, more suffering, and coming to grips with who and what they are.”
Daniel Bruhl and Emily VanCamp have already been confirmed to return as Helmut Zemo and Sharon Carter respectively, joined by Wyatt Russell as U.S. Agent. We also know Miki Ishikawa, Desmond Chiam, Noah Mills and genre alum Carl Lumbly all have roles but it’s not clear what they are.
Recently the series resumed work in Atlanta, though won’t premiere until early 2021 as it still has plenty of post-production to go.
