McQuarrie On How Much Of M:I-8 Is Done

Paramount Pictures

We’re less than a week away from “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One” hitting cinemas three years after filming on the project began.

The reviews are stellar, and the film is on track to have one of the biggest openings of the year. It also begs the question, how is work on “Dead Reckoning Part Two” going?

That production is currently pausing filming for a few weeks as writer/director Christopher McQuarrie and members of the cast (including Tom Cruise) are out promoting the first film.

As part of that promotion, McQuarrie spoke with One Heat Minute Productions podcast host and Dark Horizons contributor Blake Howard who asked how far through on ‘Part Two’ they are. It turns out not as much as you may think:

“Yeah, we’ve filmed a chunk of it. We’ve shot Africa. We’ve shot the Arctic. There’s an entire storyline with characters you’re yet to meet and yet to hear about, which I’m very, very excited about.

I would say probably, if I had to guess, probably 40% of the movie, maybe a little less. The very, very big action, the biggest & most complicated sequence is yet to come.”

Various bits of filming have been spotted to date, including shooting in the Lake District in the UK and onboard the USS George H.W. Bush aircraft carrier off the coast of Italy.

Whilst many of the characters from the first part return, the second part will introduce some other faces, including Holt McCallany (“Mindhunter”) as the U.S. Secretary of Defense, along with acclaimed acting veterans like Nick Offerman (“Parks and Recreation”), Janet McTeer (“Albert Nobbs”) and Hannah Waddingham (“Ted Lasso”) as well as Inuit actress Lucy Tulugarjuk (“Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner”).

We also know from McQuarrie himself Rolf Saxon will return as CIA Analyst William Donloe from the first film for the Arctic sequence.

For now, “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two” remains on track to release in cinemas on June 28th 2024.
