It was a race to the finish, but with the final numbers now in, “Top Gun: Maverick” ended up winning the four-day Labor Day weekend holiday box-office.

The Tom Cruise-led film added a further $7.9 million to its gross between Friday and Monday, bringing its domestic gross total to $701 million. That takes it past “Black Panther” to become the fifth-highest grossing movie in domestic box office history.

In addition, Paramount says it has become the only film to ever be No. 1 at the domestic box office for both Memorial Day and Labor Day holidays.

The film’s ascent up the charts is expected to stop around this point as the next highest domestic grosser is “Avatar” at $760 million – with that film getting a re-release later this month to push its grosses higher.

Its nearest competition over the holiday was “Bullet Train” in its fifth week with a further $7.3 million. Then came the “Spider-Man: No Way Home” re-release that snagged a further $6.55 million for Sony and Marvel in third place.

“DC League of Super-Pets” at $6.36 million, “The Invitation” at $6 million, “Beast” at $4.9 million and “Minions: The Rise of Gru” at $4.5 million came in fourth through seventh. Eighth place went to the “Jaws” re-release which nabbed $3.3 million and the highest per screen average of any film in the Top 30.

George Miller’s “Three Thousand Years of Longing” plummeted to 13th place in its second weekend, the film taking in just $2.1 million over the four days. That’s still better than the other newcomers with “Honk for Jesus. Save Your Soul.” debuting in 14th place with $1.72 million.
