Matthias Schoenaerts (“The Old Guard,” “Far from the Madding Crowd”) is set to play the title role of Django in a high-concept, ten-part TV series reimagining of Sergio Corbucci’s classic 1966 spaghetti western film.

European TV giants Sky and Canal+ along with producers Cattleya (“Gomorrah”) and Atlantique Productions (“Midnight Sun”) are backing the project loosely based on the hyper-violent film and set in the Wild West of the 1860s and 1870s.

The new series is said to offer a “thought-provoking reappraisal of masculinity in the Western genre” and follows Django, haunted by the murder of his family eight years earlier, who is still looking for his daughter whom he believes may have survived the killing.

He is shocked to find her as one of the founders of New Babylon, a city of outcasts, full of men and women of all backgrounds, races and creeds. She’s also about to get married and wants Django to leave fearing he will put New Babylon in jeopardy if he stays. Django however is determined to not lose his daughter twice.

The first episodes of the series, to be directed by Francesca Comencini. Production is due to get underway in May.
