“Mass Effect” TV Series Gets A Showrunner

BioWare

The long-gestating TV series based on BioWare’s “Mass Effect” video games is taking a big step forward as Doug Jung has been hired as showrunner.

Jung most recently served as executive producer and showrunner on the upcoming Jason Momoa-led Apple TV+ series “The Chief of War”. He served as a producer on “Big Love” and “Dark Blue” and a writer on “Mindhunter” and “Banshee”. He also wrote the film “Star Trek Beyond” with Simon Pegg.

Jung will join Dan Casey who has been writing the project for almost a year. Michael Gamble, Karim Zreik, Ari Arad and Emmy Yu will executive produce.

First released over a decade ago, the original “Mass Effect” trilogy contains one of the most well established, diverse and cinematic space opera screen universes outside of the “Star Wars” and “Star Trek” franchises.

In the games, you play as Commander Shepherd who must assemble a crew of various aliens and humans to take on the return of an ancient threat to all life in the galaxy in the 22nd century. Four games in total have been made with a fifth currently in development.

Previous attempts to develop the franchise as a feature film have failed. What approach the TV series will take is under wraps.
