BioWare has released their “Mass Effect” video game trilogy remaster “Mass Effect: Legendary Edition” on Friday and so far it’s drawing excellent reviews – the console editions scoring an 89 & 90 on Metacritic.
One complaint, though one we already knew about, is the lack of the “Mass Effect 3” multiplayer mode. The developers previously indicated they didn’t have time or plans to include it for the release, but project director Mac Walters says it’s possible it will come back if the circumstances are right and if the remasters are well received. He tells CNET:
“I would never say no to that. We want to see what kind of reception the Legendary Edition gets and what the demand for the multiplayer is, and then we’ll ask ourselves if we have the resources and time to bring it up to the quality level we and fans want.”
On Steam, initial reaction to the Legendary Edition was mixed before increasing to very positive. The mixed reviews were mainly due to the surprise of having to launch Origin in the background, along with some small tech issues like no ultrawide support for cut scenes and no FOV slider (the latter has been fixed with a mod already).
On console, game analysts have discovered that all the games have the exact same visuals, 4K resolution and 60fps frame rate on both PS5 and Xbox Series X in ‘Favor Quality’ mode.
In ‘Favor Performance’ mode both have 1440p resolution and both lose a bit of ambient occlusion, but the PS5 stays to a locked 60fps while the Xbox Series X goes up to 120fps – though it varies depending upon scene (the Citadel environments in the first drop to 80fps for example).
Both consoles are in ‘back compat’ mode though and don’t have updates as yet to take full advantage of their current hardware. “Mass Effect Legendary Edition” is now available.
