Marvel’s “Secret Invasion” Has A Slow Start

Marvel Studios launched their newest series, “Secret Invasion,” via the Disney+ service last week.

Though there’s been no update from the streamer on how it performed, analytics firm Samba TV has come forward with the first numbers indicating the series was watched by 994,000 U.S households during its first five days.

That means the show outperformed the first episode of “Ms. Marvel” which garnered 775,000 households over the same time, but otherwise is one of the lowest viewership records for an MCU series compared to its predecessors.

The likes of “She-Hulk” and “Hawkeye” took in 1.5 million on the same service over the same period, “WandaVision” was at 1.6 million, “Moon Knight” and “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” were both at 1.8 million and the first season of “Loki” reigns supreme with 2.5 million.

The reason for the lower numbers isn’t clear. At 64% critics and 74% audience reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, the reaction appears to have been mixed. The show has seen some shaking up of the MCU, which has generated talk, though it looks like that’s not translating to numbers.

Set in the present-day MCU, the series follows Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) as he learns of a covert invasion of Earth by a faction of shapeshifting Skrulls. Ben Mendelsohn, Olivia Colman, Emilia Clarke, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Cobie Smulders, Martin Freeman, Don Cheadle, Dermot Mulroney, Killian Scott, Christopher McDonald, and Carmen Ejogo star.

The six-episode series has just released its second episode and will continue to air new episodes every Wednesday through until July 26th.
