Marvel’s “Guardians Vol. 3” Passes $500 Million

Marvel Studios and James Gunn’s “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” has reached a milestone with the trilogy capper crossing the half-billion mark after its second weekend.

After just ten days, the Disney-released film now sits at an estimated $528.8 million worldwide through Sunday – split between $213.2 million domestically and $315.6 million internationally.

Here’s an interesting comparison. The prior Marvel film “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” opened at around $102 million domestically earlier this year, only a little shy of the third “Guardians” $118 million debut last weekend.

Yet, in a damning indicator of the different reactions to it, ‘Guardians’ has already shot past the entire $475.8 million worldwide gross that ‘Quantumania’ took nearly three months to amass.

The success means Chris Pratt is now the biggest movie star of 2023 with his work here and in Universal’s “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” giving him the top two spots at the year’s box-office.

‘Mario’ itself has managed to rack up a running global haul of $1.21 billion so far and still has some way to go – even as it’s about to hit PVOD platforms this week.

Both are now about to face more intense competition with the latest releases from their own studios – Universal’s “Fast X” and Disney’s “The Little Mermaid”.
