Two major spring releases have revealed their runtimes with both going in different directions.
Nintendo and Illumination’s “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” is reportedly set to clock in at a brisk runtime of 92 minutes according to the Irish Film Classification Office.
That’s on par with recent animated features like “Minions: The Rise of Gru” at 90 minutes, and shorter than the likes of “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” at 100 minutes and “Lightyear” at 105 minutes.
This adaptation of the popular Nintendo games follows two Brooklyn plumbers who are brothers and best friends: Mario, the brave one with the ‘let’s-a-go’ attitude, and the perpetually anxious Luigi, who would prefer to go nowhere.
The pair are forced to leave behind their struggling plumbing business and wind up in a whirlwind adventure through the Mushroom Kingdom as they try to unite the land in an effort to defeat Bowser.
The film stars Chris Pratt as Mario, Charlie Day as Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, and Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong.
Meanwhile, Collider reports that the “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” film is reportedly set to land at 137 minutes – the same length as “Furious 7” and “Terminator 2: Judgment Day”. That could potentially suggest a more fleshed out film than the trailers may have led on.
The film tells the story of a group of rogues who steal an artifact as part of a routine job – only to discover that they’ve accidentally delivered doomsday to their fantasy realm and must try to reverse their fate.
Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Justice Smith, Sophia Lillis, Rege-Jean Page and Hugh Grant star in the project which hails from “Game Night” directors Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley.
“Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” is set to debut in cinemas on March 31st with “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” releasing a week later on April 7th. Internationally both films are reportedly each set to arrive a week earlier.
