Arguably, the wildest film-related rumour in a few weeks has emerged over the weekend in regards to filmmaker Luca Guadagnino’s upcoming film adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’ novel “American Psycho”.
British tabloid The Sun (via World of Reel) is reporting that the “Challengers” and “Call Me By Your Name” director wants to gender-swap the main role of Patrick Bateman and that Margot Robbie is in ‘advanced discussions’ to star in the project.
Such a change would certainly differentiate the film from the prior and highly acclaimed 2000 feature adaptation starring Christian Bale as the notorious yuppie serial killer.
The original work follows an image-obsessed investment banker who leads a double life as a serial killer.
Guadagnino’s version features a script by Scott Z. Burns and was already said to be a ‘total’ reimagining of the source material with a shift away from horror satire towards a more carnal take.
Guadagnino is presently occupied with “Artificial,” a feature tackling Sam Altman and OpenAI for Amazon, which is targeting a release next year.
Amusingly, nine years ago, Robbie herself spoofed the 2000 “American Psycho” film’s famous introduction sequence in a video for Vogue.
