Orca Studios has opened in Spain utilising the same LED volume technology employed by ILM on its Stagecraft system for “The Mandalorian” – technology some label the biggest step-forward for filmmaking since green screen.
Developed with the support of Epic Games and in collaboration with Kinolux in Spain, LED wall volumes replace static backgrounds in virtual studios with exterior or interior images that adjust in sync with camera movement, the screen graphics powered by video game engines.
This allows filmmakers to shoot exterior scenes in the far safer controlled environment of a studio, and to switch set ups in mere minutes. It also overcomes issues such as time of day lighting, noise issues and restricted access.
The studio allows all environment work and other virtual production to qualify for Spain’s new 45%-50% tax rebates for foreign productions. The Madrid LED volume studio will host its first shoot from June 8th.
