XTR, H.wood Media, NSV and Delirio Films are all teaming up for a new feature film documentary about basketball legend Earvin ‘Magic’ Johnson.
The filmmakers involved have apparently scored ‘unprecedented access’ to the Basketball Hall of Fame inductee and man who helped lead the Los Angeles Lakers to five championships.
He himself had three MVP titles, twelve All Star games and one Olympic gold medal over the course of his career. His announcement in 1991 that he was HIV positive helped changed the perception of the condition and he became a powerful advocate for HIV-AIDS research.
The film will rely on archival footage of Johnson, as well as interviews with him, his family, fellow NBA players and business leaders. Directors are currently under consideration.
The doco follows in the wake of ESPN’s “The Last Dance” series which finished its run as the most-popular ESPN documentary in history.
