Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (SSU), or as it’s more affectionately known – the Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters (SPUMC), has yielded some odd films.
On the one hand you have “Venom,” films that combine an anti-hero superhero formula with a slapstick-fuelled body horror rom-com about a man and the intimate relationship he shares with his parasite.
On the other, you have “Morbius” – a film about which the less is said, the better. You also have the “Kraven the Hunter” film on the way, with the first footage for that shown at CinemaCon described as brutal and savagely violent.
Then there’s “Madame Web” – a movie about which even the basics aren’t really known beyond casting. In a recent interview with Collider, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura opened up a little more about the film and calls it: “a different kind of movie in that universe.”
Di Bonaventura says the film won’t be an average Sony Marvel movie and is “not an action picture, [rather] more of a thriller”. The reason being is that the character’s skill set “is not conducive to an action piece.”
Even so, Di Bonaventura promises the film will “be familiar to the audience in terms of what universe it’s playing in.” Set photos show the story will unfold in the early 2000s.
Dakota Johnson stars as the titular character alongside Sydney Sweeney, Celeste O’Connor, Isabela Merced, Emma Roberts, Tahar Rahim, Mike Epps and Adam Scott.
“Madame Web” is being directed by “Jessica Jones” alum S.J. Clarkson from a screenplay written by “Morbius” scribes Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless. The film will arrive in cinemas on February 16th.
