Cancellation news often gets shuffled out late Friday, and today is no different as three shows fell to the axe.
First up, Peacock has announced it has cancelled two of its young adult drama series – “Vampire Academy” after one season and “One of Us Is Lying” after two seasons. Both shows have already finished their runs and thus have no new episodes to air.
Based on the novel by Karen M. McManus, ‘Lying’ follows what happens when five high schoolers walk into detention and only four make it out alive – leaving all of them suspects.
‘Vampire’ adapts Richelle Mead’s famed book series about a world of privilege and glamour where two young women’s friendship transcends their strikingly different classes as they prepare to complete their education and enter royal vampire society.
Reports are that whilst Peacock was happy with the show’s creative aspects, neither did the sort of ratings that the streamer thought would justify further seasons.
Universal Studio Group produced both shows, and while ‘Lying’ may try and be shopped elsewhere, ‘Vampire’ isn’t so likely as showrunner Julie Plec and her co-exec producer Adam Starks have already moved on to the mystery drama series “Freeman” for the streamer.
That’s not all, as Apple TV+ has opted to cancel its series adaptation of Paul Theroux’s “The Mosquito Coast” after two seasons. The streamer opted not to renew the Justin Theroux and Melissa George-led series for a third season two weeks after the second ended its run on a cliffhanger.
In doing so, the series – which so far served as a loosely spun prequel to the novel rather than a straight adaptation – won’t get around to tackling the events of the book. A more direct adaptation of the novel served as the basis of Peter Weir’s famed 1980s film adaptation which starred Harrison Ford, Helen Mirren and River Phoenix.
