Earlier this year, Netflix released “Luther: The Fallen Sun,” the long-awaited film continuation of the British psychological crime thriller series “Luther”.
A film take on the property has been talked about by star Idris Elba and creator Neil Cross ever since the first season launched back in 2010.
Ultimately four more seasons were produced, with the show racking up twenty episodes overall before wrapping in early 2019. It took a few years, but the film was made and then hit the service on March 10th to a mixed-positive critical response.
Third-party analytics service Samba TV reported that the film earned the top spot in all of streaming in the show’s week of release, and the title topped the Netflix charts shortly after its release along with staying in the top ten for quite a bit.
Now Elba, out promoting the Apple TV+ series “Hijack” and speaking with Collider, says that the film had performed so well for Netflix that chances are a sequel is likely:
“Yeah, it did really well. Luther ended up being one of the top five most streamed films on Netflix, which is an incredible achievement since it was the first film from the television show. I’m hoping to make another one. I love Luther. I love that character, and I love where I can possibly take him as a story and as a character. So, yeah, keep your fingers crossed.”
Cross and director Jamie Payne appear to tease potential future instalments in the final film with an ending that seems set up to continue forward along some story threads.
