Neil Cross, the creator of the Idris Elba-led “Luther” TV series, says future appearances of the John Luther character will be restricted to films from now on following the success of 2023’s Netflix feature “Luther: The Fallen Sun”
He tells the Radio Times: “Certainly, were he to come back, were that happy event to take place, I think film would be the natural place for him.”
The comments follow on from an interview a few weeks ago in which Cross claimed there are “extraordinarily strong possibilities” for fans to see Luther again on screen.
Cross also claims he’s open to expanding the Luther universe with TV projects.
“But the world of Luther… I think, things are such now that it’s not just a character, it’s a world. If you’ve gone on long enough, there is a world to inhabit, and elements of that world can belong on the big or the small screen. So I wouldn’t be at all averse to something in the same universe, as it were, happening on telly.”
“Luther” ran for five seasons from 2010-2019 on BBC One and introduced multiple memorable characters including Dermot Crowley’s Martin Schenk, and most famously Ruth Wilson’s Alice Morgan.
