The Marilyn Monroe biopic “Blonde” may have drawn all the headlines, but the divisive and controversial film was beaten in its first week on Netflix.
“Lou,” starring Allison Janney in a Liam Neeson-style action vehicle, topped the streamer in its second week of release with 46.19 million hours viewed for the period of September 26th-October 2nd. “Blonde,” which hit the streamer on September 28th, was watched for 37.34 million hours.
The #1 & #2 placing happened in the U.S., Australia, and on the worldwide chart for the streamer. “Lou” also pulled in better reviews than “Blonde,” charting at 68% with critics and 62% with audiences on Rotten Tomatoes compared to 42% & 32% for “Blonde”. Same goes on Metacritic where “Lou” landed 51/100 vs. “Blonde” with 49/100.
“Lou” stars Janney as a woman who put her dangerous past behind her. She finds her quiet life interrupted when a desperate mother (Jurnee Smollett) begs her to save her kidnapped daughter.
As a massive storm rages, the two women risk their lives on a rescue mission that will test their limits and expose dark and shocking secrets from their pasts. Anna Foerster helms the project, which debuted the week before and racked up 40.57 million hours in its first week.
“Blonde” remains the subject of backlash on social media over its treatment of the real Monroe and its graphic depictions of sexual assault.
