Back in 2012, “Guardians of the Galaxy” filmmaker James Gunn scripted the cult action video game “Lollipop Chainsaw” which was released on the PS3 & Xbox 360 (but not PC) but is unplayable on modern hardware.
Now, a remake of the game has been announced by Yoshimi Yasuda, formerly the CEO of Kadokawa Games which published the original. Yasuda left Kadokawa in May to establish a new company called Dragami Games with his remake being one of their first projects.
In a statement posted on Twitter, Yasuda says hs new company has purchased the Lollipop Chainsaw IP from Kadokawa Games and has decided to develop a remake. They’ve also been in contact with Warner Bros. (who published the game outside Asia) who are supporting them.
Yasuda says: “It has been some time since players have not been able to access the game on current consoles. We, the original development staff on Lollipop Chainsaw, think of the game as very precious to us, and did not want to leave it in limbo, where players who want to play it cannot.”
Yasuda added that while most of the original staff are working on the remake, some elements will be different from the original 2012 game including more realistic graphics and an updated soundtrack as they cannot include all of the 15 licensed songs used in the original.
The new “Lollipop Chainsaw” will arrive in 2023.
