Live-Action “Monster High” Film Sets Its Director

Paramount+

Gerard Johnstone (“M3GAN,” “Housebound”) is set to direct “Monster High,” the live-action feature film based on the Mattel brand that was announced exactly a year ago.

Universal Pictures is partnering with Mattel and producer/screenwriter Akiva Goldsman’s Weed Road banner on the project, which will boast an original story based on the popular line of fashion dolls conceived as the children of legendary monsters

The story follows them as they grow up and deal with the trials and tribulations of high school. The dolls were introduced in 2010, and the property was previously adapted for the screen as fifteen animated TV specials over a seven-year span.

More recently, an animated series premiered on Nickelodeon in 2022 while a prior live-action film and a sequel premiered directly on Nickelodeon and Paramount+ in 2022 and 2023 respectively.

Johnstone says in a statement: “With Barbie, Mattel Studios demonstrated that they’re not afraid to take bold swings with their IP. What makes Monster High so exciting for me is the opportunity to play in the sandbox of so many iconic monster myths.”

Robbie Brenner and Akiva Goldsman will produce. The news follows on from Mattel and Universal teaming for a Monster High Skullector M3GAN Doll ahead of the release of “M3GAN 2.0” at the end of this month.
