Live-Action “Captain Planet” Series Planned

TBS

Netflix has begun development of “Captain Planet,” a live-action TV series based on the cult 1990s animated series.

Greg Berlanti’s Berlanti Productions, Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way and Warner Bros. Television are all backing the project while “Mrs. Davis” co-creator/executive producer Tara Hernandez will be writing.

The original six season series centered on five young people from around the world who were given magical rings that had the power to control natural elements. United, they can summon Captain Planet, a superhero who helps them fight against environmental evils.

Appian Way had been pushing for a live-action feature take at Paramount Pictures in recent years with Glen Powell co-writing and potentially starring. That version didn’t get out of development, with the rights reverting to Warner Bros. Discovery.

Jono Matt, who co-wrote that version, remains onboard here as a producer while DiCaprio, Berlanti, Jennifer Davisson, Sarah Schechter and Leigh London Redman executive produce.

Berlanti famously created the DC ‘Arrowverse’ – multiple successful series based on DC Comics properties which ran for years on The CW. His company is also behind Netflix’s recently finished hit series “You”.
