“Shang Chi” duo Simu Liu and Awkwafina will join John Cena in filmmaker Paul Feig’s new action comedy “Grand Death Lotto” for Amazon Studios. Filming is scheduled to commence next week in California.
Feig directs from a screenplay by Rob Yescombe (“Outside The Wire”) in a story set in a financially stricken California in the near future where residents are allowed to kill the winner of the state’s lottery before sundown in order to claim the prize.
Newly arrived in Los Angeles, lottery winner Katie (Awkwafina) must join forces with amateur jackpot protector Noel (Cena) to make it to sundown in order to legally claim her multi-billion dollar prize.
Liu plays Louis Lewis, Noel’s protection rival Louis Lewis who also wants to keep Katie safe and claim his rich protection commission. Feig, Laura Fischer, Joe Roth and Jeff Kirschenbaum will produce.
Cena recently starred in “Peacemaker” and has multiple films on the way including “Fast X,” “Argylle” and “Ricky Stanicky”. Awkwafina has both “The Little Mermaid” and “Renfield” due this year.
Liu will be seen in the upcoming “Barbie” film and “One True Loves”. “Spy” and “A Simple Favor” director Feig most recently helmed “The School For Good And Evil” at Netflix.
