Lionsgate has won a heated bidding war for the film rights to Judy Blume’s beloved novel “Are You There, God? It’s Me, Margaret” and have committed to green lighting the movie.
The story follows a sixth grader who moves from the city to the suburbs and prays to God to watch over her and help her through her anxieties, including puberty and its changes to her body and her emotions.
“Edge of Seventeen” filmmaker Kelly Fremon Craig will adapt the script and direct the film which will be produced by James L. Brooks, Julie Ansell, Richard Sakai, Amy Brooks, Fremon Craig and Blume through Gracie Films.
Blume has famously refused adaptations of ‘Margaret’ over the years. This news comes just days after her other famed work, the “Summer Sisters” books, have been picked up by Hulu to be turned into a limited scripted series by Liz Tigelaar (“Little Fires Everywhere”).
