BBC One’s acclaimed police corruption series “Line of Duty” returned for its sixth season on Sunday night in the UK where it reached a record audience of 9.56 million.
That overnight rating numbers beat its previous best overnight performance of 9.1 million for the fifth season finale, and the best performing drama on UK television in three years which was ‘Duty’ creator Jed Mercurio’s 2018 mini-series “Bodyguard”.
Numbers will only go up once streaming and catch-up viewing comes in. Reviews for the series premiere indicate things are going as strong as ever quality-wise, whilst also returning to form a bit after going down the elaborate conspiracy rabbit hole in the fifth season.
“Trainspotting” star Kelly Macdonald is the guest lead for the new season as DCI Joanne Davidson, the senior investigating officer on an unsolved murder case whose suspicious conduct attracts the attention of AC-12 inspectors. Regulars Vicky McClure, Adrian Dunbar, and Martin Compston return.
Outside the UK, “Line of Duty” is expected to come to Acorn TV in North America later this year (though that’s not been confirmed). The series airs in Australia on Britbox from April 1st.
